Phooey. The full image is too busy, even after I deliberately lost a lot of shadow detail, but the cropped version is oddly proportioned and spoiled by that burned-out area on the wall.

I still say the little red squiggle looks like someone peering out from behind a curtain.
My vote goes to the first one too :-) Very atmospheric.

I really like the first one - it looks really noiresque (is that a word?). It doesn't seem busy to me, the red of the traffic light captures the eye nicely.
