As I said in comments, I must take a closer look at DSA; T reckons the Greens might suit, so I'll consider them as well. I sure as shit ain't no Democrat, and voting Republican after 2000 is prima facie evidence of culpable stupidity, contemptible lack of ethics, or both.

Malcolm Gladwell reviews "Here's Why" by Charles Tilly "Reason-giving, Tilly says, reflects, establishes, repairs, and negotiates relationships." Four categories of reasons: conventions ("don't snitch"), stories ("because X did Y which made me feel Z"), codes (high level, formalized conventions like laws) and technical accounts (stories + specialized knowledge and authority, like academic histories).
